February 8, 2015 AM Worship
Vine Street Baptist Church was pleased to welcome two guests to the pulpit platform this week. Â Eric Nerby led the worship service and Dr. Michael Pholman brought today’s sermon message.
Nerby is originally from Washington state and went to The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California for his undergraduate work.  Nerby and his wife of just over two years, Kayla, moved to Louisville so he could attend Southern Seminary, working on a Masters of Church Ministry with a goal of getting into full time youth ministry. When not busy with school or their 10 month-old son, Nerby works some in the IT community at SBTS and more recently in the Louisville Technical Operations Center of CompuCom.
Pholman is Assistant Professor of Christian Preaching at Southern Seminary, having received a PhD in American church history there.  Also from Washington State, he received a B. A. from the University of Washington and an M. Div from Western Seminary. He is a published writer, contributing to a variety of organizations such as The Gospel Coalition, where he also served for a time as Executive Director, Christianity.com, Crosswalk.com and other periodicals.  Pholman lost his wife, Julia, to cancer last year after a 5-year long battle with cancer.  His four children were in attendance with him today.
The service began with Deacon Betty Jeffries reading Psalm 121 and saying a prayer from that passage. Â Nerby led the gathered in reflective renditions of some classic hymns.
- It is Well With My Soul
- Great is Thy Faithfulness
Pastor Ben welcomed everyone and encouraged a time of fellowship before giving a few announcements. Â A pastoral prayer was followed by him reading 2 Corinthians 4:1-6, then there was more singing.
- Behold Our God
- Speak O Lord
Deacon Donnie Aebersold said a prayer before the offering was collected, and Nerby played quietly on his guitar while the plates were passed.
Pohlman took to the pulpit to bring a special message from Hebrews. Due to technical difficulties, the sermon was not recorded this week.Â
